NHTSA: last two years have seen huge fatal accident increases

A couple of months ago, we wrote a post about the rising fatality number in the state of California when it comes to car accidents. They have been on the rise since 2010, and now a new report from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that this rise isn't specific to California or any given state -- it is a national problem that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

According to the new data from the NHTSA, fatal traffic accidents increased 8.1 percent from 2014 to 2015. The numbers only went up from 2015 to last year, 2016, which saw a 5.6 percent increase. We have some severe problems out on the road right now, and without well thought out improvements, these numbers will likely only go up.

Practically every subcategory saw increases too. Deaths in motorcycle accidents went up 5.1 percent, marking the highest rate since 2008. Pedestrian accident fatalities increased by a startling 9 percent, marking the highest rate since 1990. Bicycle accident deaths and drunk driving deaths also went up, but by smaller numbers (1.3 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively).

Unfortunately, there aren't any clear solutions to these problems right now. We have a rising fatal accident rate and no clear ways to address it -- unless the self-driving car revolution happens earlier than we expect. Until then, be as careful as you can out on the roads and hold dangerous drivers accountable in civil court if their negligence can be proven.
