Statistics on the number of workplace injuries in California

Accidents occur every day in California. Some of these accidents are minor and do not affect the people involved very much. However, other accidents result in severe injuries to those involved. These injuries can change people's lives for a period of time. This can include being unable to work while they recover. While these accidents can also occur in many different locations, people expect to be safe in certain circumstances. One of these circumstances is while the person is at work. Employees expect that the employer will keep them safe so they can continue to do their job.

Truck driving is a dangerous job for more reasons than you expect

Although it may not seem like it, truck drivers suffer more fatalities than any other occupation in the United States. Tractor-trailer drivers account for one of every six workers killed on the job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They also are three times more likely to experience non-fatal injuries or illness. Even though 78 percent of fatalities were caused by transportation incidents, it is not the only cause of truck driver injury.

2014 data shows drop in fatal workplace accidents in California

A report from the California Department of Industrial Relations found that the number of fatal workplace incidents in 2014 (the most recent year for available data) showed a sharp decline from previous years. In 2012 and 2013, there were 375 workplace deaths and 396 workplace deaths, respectively. In 2014, that number plummeted to 344. That's a significant safety step -- but that's still nearly one workplace fatality per day in the state.
