On Behalf of | Jun 2, 2016 | Workplace Accidents

Construction workers often use heavy equipment to do their jobs. Machines like cherry pickers allow workers to work far off the ground, but a mistake or mechanical failure can put their lives in danger.

Tragically, a construction worker was killed in the Bay Area recently while standing in the basket of a cherry picker. Though the incident is under investigation by local police and state worker safety officials, some details have emerged.

According to KPIX-TV, the victim was a man in his 40s. He was working inside a ramp at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, using a cherry picker, when he got pinned against the cement ceiling above him.

Others on the construction crew witnessed the incident. They got the victim out of the cherry picker and called 911, but the man died at the scene.

It is not yet clear why the cherry picker crushed the victim against the ceiling. The construction project’s management said it was investigating, along with San Francisco police and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

Though we don’t know for sure, there is a good chance this man was married and had children. Families can be left grieving by a deadly workplace accident. In addition, they could face serious financial hardship.

Whether a worker is killed on the job, or suffers a less serious injury that nevertheless causes the worker to be laid up for a while, he or she could qualify for workers’ compensation benefits. The process can be complicated, and a workers’ compensation attorney can help.
