Making a car insurance claim? Do these things

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2019 | Car Accidents

If you’re involved in any type of car accident, there’s a good chance you’ll need to file an insurance claim.

While this sounds as simple as contacting your agent, there’s more to it than that. If you don’t take the right steps, it could hinder your ability to obtain compensation for your injuries and related damages.

Here are three tips you need to follow:

  • Review your policy: Before you contact your agent, review your policy to ensure that you understand your coverage. You pay for car insurance every month, so you should receive compensation as outlined by the policy.
  • Take notes: Every conversation with an insurance company representative is an important one. Make note of who you spoke with, their job title, what was discussed and the time and date.
  • Don’t accept the first offer: Your car insurance company may make you a low-ball offer in hopes that you immediately accept it. Rather than do this, compare the offer against what you think you should receive. If you’re not happy with it, explain your reasoning to the insurance company and move forward from there.

A motor vehicle accident has the potential to bring a lot of stress to your life. This is particularly true if you suffer a serious injury, such as whiplash or broken bones.

In the event that your car insurance company is fighting you every step of the way, learn more about your legal rights and what you can do to protect them. You pay for your insurance coverage every month, so don’t accept anything less than what you deserve.
