Can nurses get workers’ compensation if injured on the job?

On Behalf of | Aug 19, 2022 | workers' compensation

California nurses are no stranger to difficult jobs with long hours. They are also prone to on-the-job injuries and illnesses, so it’s fair to wonder if they can get workers’ compensation.

Can nurses get workers’ compensation?

Nurses are entitled to workers’ compensation benefits if they suffer injuries or illnesses directly from their duties at work. As long as the nurse is a regular employee of the organization, rather than an independent contractor, they can file a claim for workers’ comp. Hospitals, doctors’ offices, clinics, surgical centers and other healthcare facilities are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance in the event that an employee becomes injured or sick while on the job.

Some common causes of work-related injuries and illnesses for nurses

Certain types of on-the-job injuries and illnesses are very common among nurses. Perhaps the most common is overexertion and repetitive motion injuries, which occur when a nurse has to continuously perform lifting, reaching and bending motions. Over time, when moving patients back and forth and lifting them, it can strain the joints, tendons and muscles.

Nurses can suffer trips, slips and falls when floors are wet and slick or when there are objects littered on the floor. However, some of these accidents and injuries occur when they wear improper footwear. Nurses should wear sturdy shoes with good traction on their soles.

It’s common for nurses to be exposed to contagious illnesses on the job. In some cases, wearing personal protective equipment can protect them, but it’s not always foolproof.

Nurses can suffer needle pricks if they’re not careful while handling sharps. This can lead to serious injuries or illnesses if the object is contaminated.
