Workplace eye safety in California

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2023 | workers' compensation

As shocking as this may seem, at least 2000 American workers sustain job-related eye injuries every single day that requires urgent medical attention. However, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) experts believe that employers and their employees in California and the rest of the country can prevent 90% of these cases by implementing proper safety protocols. They include:

Wearing eye protection

Eye protection gear is essential for employees exposed to hazardous conditions, such as flying particles or chemical splashes that could cause serious eye injury. All employers in California must provide proper safety gear according to OSHA standards and ensure that their staff uses it while on the job.

It’s also important to note that using prescription glasses only doesn’t offer enough protection and that employees should wear appropriate eye protection that’s tested according to the ANSI Z87.1-2020 standards. The criteria for these tests include resistance to high-speed particles, optical radiation and impact.

Proper training and education

Employers must ensure that all employees understand the importance of workplace eye safety. They should educate their staff members on the signs and symptoms of hazardous conditions and the proper use of safety gear. Moreover, regular refresher courses are key to ensuring workers know how to handle risks properly.

Eye safety equipment maintenance

Employers must also ensure that all safety equipment is appropriately inspected and maintained. This includes cleaning lenses, checking for damage, replacing worn-out parts and making sure the gear fits properly.

What if an accident occurs

If an accident occurs, employees have a right to a workers’ compensation claim for medical treatment and other benefits. Employers must also make sure to provide a prompt emergency response, as it is essential to reduce the risk of permanent vision loss or other serious injury.

Workplace eye safety is a critical issue for employers in California, but it can be effectively managed by implementing adequate protocols and training. By making sure their staff members use proper safety gear, receive appropriate education and have access to timely medical assistance when accidents occur, employers can provide safe and secure working conditions for their employees.
