What to know about rotator cuff injuries

On Behalf of | Oct 17, 2023 | workers' compensation, workplace injuries

Rotator cuff injuries can be extremely painful and are unlikely to heal without surgery or other forms of medical intervention. If you are hurt at work, you may be entitled to compensation as most California companies are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. Let’s take a closer look at the potential causes of rotator cuff injuries as well as the possible signs of damage to this body part.

Causes of rotator cuff injuries

A rotator cuff can be injured if the arm is moved either up or down in an awkward motion. For instance, this body part could be injured after something falls on it and pushes your arm down. Conversely, your arm could move haphazardly over your head as you reach for something to break a fall. Finally, rotator cuff damage can be caused by repetitive movements or because of old age. Regardless of why you incurred a rotator cuff injury, you can file for workers’ compensation benefits if you were hurt while performing tasks for your employer.

Symptoms of rotator cuff injuries

You may notice that it is difficult to lift even light objects such as a carton of milk without difficulty. In fact, it may be difficult to lift your arm at all without discomfort. It may also be difficult to put any pressure on the damaged body part, which can make it harder to sleep or sit in the same position for an extended period of time.

If you are hurt at work, your main objective is to seek treatment in a timely manner. You are also encouraged to file a workers’ compensation claim within 24 hours of getting hurt if possible. Photos, video footage and other evidence can be used to bolster your claim that you were hurt while at work.
