Factory workers manufacture and assemble goods that people and businesses count on. These workers face significant hazards on each shift, but it’s up to their employers to take steps to keep those workers safe.
These are some of the more common hazards that factory workers can face:
1. Machinery can cause serious injuries
Heavy machinery is a staple in most factories, and it’s one of the most common sources of injury. From conveyor belts and presses to forklifts and robotic arms, these machines can be hazardous if they’re not operated correctly or maintained properly.
Common risks include entanglement, crush injuries and accidental startups. Guarding systems, lockout/tagout procedures and operator training are essential safeguards. Even something as simple as loose clothing or jewelry can quickly become a serious hazard near moving parts.
2. Noise exposure can lead to permanent hearing loss
Factory environments are often loud. Repeated exposure to high noise levels, especially above 85 decibels, can lead to permanent hearing damage over time. The trouble is, hearing loss usually happens gradually, so many workers may not notice it until it’s too late.
Employers typically provide ear protection, but it only works if it’s used consistently and correctly. Rotating tasks, implementing sound barriers and investing in quieter machinery can also reduce exposure.
3. Chemical exposure poses invisible risks
Factories that use solvents, paints, cleaning agents, or other hazardous materials expose workers to chemical risks. These can affect the skin, lungs or even internal organs, depending on how the exposure occurs.
Proper ventilation, use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and clear labeling of materials are key steps in minimizing these risks. Workers should also be trained on what to do in the event of a spill or accidental exposure.
Workers who suffer injuries may need medical attention, which should be covered by workers’ compensation. These workers should ensure they get all the benefits they’re due, so working with someone familiar with these matters may be beneficial.
